Seven years ago I replaced the rudder of my Commander. It shows no signs
of wear. I used the old shafts which were in ok shape, moving
the lower shaft down a half inch to compensate for wear at the shoe.
The rudder is made of Mahoghany plywood and epoxy/glass. It's
entirely water-tight, can be installed without raising the boat and presents
a smoother surface in the water.
I have decided to offer replacment rudders for sale for Commanders and
Ariels built the way I made mine. A finished rudder, ready to bolt
on will cost about  $1800. USD. For more info contact me at this thread.
Cheers, B.
