Hey Bill, got any other Ariels registered in Portland, ME?

I saw the Ariel in the foreground this weekend, dark blue topsides, no name or hailing port.

We sailed past "Orca" last week around the corner from my mooring in S. Portland. I should start carrying some sort of "Hello Ariel!" packages to toss into cockpits when we sail past...

She looks like she's in decent shape although it is a zoomed out shot so I can't tell. I wonder how many rogue Ariels there are out there? When I first looked at the picture I thought the cruise ship in the background was a hotel. Those things are huge and border on being obnoxious.

How would a person "prove" the sighting? Hold a local newspaper up in the foreground? I am not making fun, I am serious.

I like the idea. I know there are a bunch in/around Newport, but I have a feeling a lot of them are registered and probably major contributors in the forums.

There is also a Commander on a mooring by the Hyatt in Newport.

Ok maybe Jack has a point above.... there should be a rule about actually "seeing" the boat and getting a picture with your camera/cell phone.

that's a good question... for my own amusement, I've kept track of the 12 meter AC boats through ADs in yachtworld as much as anything. That said, most ADs don't record the hull number, at best just a year.

but were we to look at a sample set of rules from the bird spotting community (in this case a monthly photo competition):

Rules

Entry to have been taken in the last twelve months.
Date taken to be included in the entry - must at least include month and year.
Entry must be uploaded after the 1st of the month and ten days before the end of the month (for example in a month that has 31 days, this would be the 21st.) (GMT).
Location taken should be disclosed in the details when uploading, and must include at least the county/state and country.
One entry per member.
Only minor image adjustment is permitted, such as cropping, sharpening, contrast, and levels. The photo must not be otherwise greatly manipulated ie.
objects should not be added or removed in order to enhance the shot
no composite images.
Once uploaded a photo is classed as an entry and cannot be replaced by another shot. However, you have until the closing date / time of this competition to ensure that your photo meets criteria.
The entry must be your own work and not previously submitted in a competition on this site.
Entries to be uploaded directly by entrants to the Monthly Photo Competitions Gallery.

there may be some here worth lifting for our purposes. (1) i like the minor edit rule, (2) for our purposes we need to get a hull number, location, boat name and possibly contact the owner.

I guess the ultimate point of this excercise is to a. expand the number of contributors to the forum and b. get a better survey of the number of surviving ariels and commanders.....(and c. maybe get some of the abandon ones back in service)

Cool! Just what I need - another excuse to go out sailing!

Last Summer, I almost had a conniption when I thought I saw A-24 (Archimedes) anchored off Ft. Gorges in Portland harbor. It was right around the time Tim was supposed to be taking his cruise. It turned out to be a yellow Triton. I didn't catch the name, as it left by the time we came back by...

Back to the Ariel/Commander sighting rules: "for our purposes we need to get a hull number, location, boat name and possibly contact the owner" This might be difficult,as you'd have to climb on someone's boat to get the hull number. But, it should certainly be worth bonus points for getting that info!

Points for posting "For Sale" ads? That's an interesting thought too.

I just got back from perusing my registry and see there are a few Portland Ariels. Some are out of date as I know they've been or were up for sale. But, I wonder if Admin Bill has considered an online registry like the NE Triton Association's? It could be very handy for this sort of thing, and easier in the long run to maintain. Just a thought.

But I agree with Bill (A-231), the ultimate goal would be to get an even more active forum and more people to contribute. We need to ramp up now so there's not such a void when Ebb finishes Little Gull and leaves us to go cruising.

Ramble done. ...almost. One more question: what exactly do we do with our "points"?

I'd also suggest a new thread for members to post one or two representative pictures of their yacht. I think a single thread of glamor shots would be great to browse - a representative parade of ships. I'm happy to start the thread if that sounds appealing to others, but I'd wait till farther down the roll call to post Lucky Dawg. Rather, I'd invite our elder (in time served on this forum, that is) yachtsmen to post first. Takers?
