Technical / Handrails Commander
April 11, 2009, 10:25:26 PM
The cabin top is definitely flat enough for long handrails. Wooden rails have some flex that allows for a slight curve. You may have to file down the ends so they will lay flat on the fiberglass, but not much. Since they are attached with a nut and bolt you can put more pressure than just a wood screw. I say get them as long as you want and they will work. However, I never really used mine as hand-rails and was just about to remove them when the boat sold.

I found this on a Commander and I don't know what it's for.

It's funny you would mention the handrails because if we had not sold the boat we were going to do some upgrades. One of them was to remove the handrails and put some inboard jib tracks in their place. The only real problem we had with this boat is that it would not point with comparable boats in our racing fleet. We were going to swap out the 155 genoa for a 110 and use the new inboard jib tracks to try to get it to point higher. I guess I'll never know if that would have worked.

Yes, we have a new boat. It's a 2001 Hunter 212. We lost a crew member and needed a smaller, more easily sailed vessel. I already miss the Commander, but at least I still have something to sail. Good luck to you guys. I will probably be checking in from time to time to see the amazing work you do fixing up these great old boats. Cheers, David.

I have sold C229. Thanks for all of your good advice over the last three years. The new owner has already visited this site and I believe he will be an active participant.

I don't suppose there is any chance you still have the hatch cover, huh? I could sure use it. C229 has an old home-made one that doesn't look too great, but it doesn't look too bad either. I assume the fiberglass one is original. That is why I am interested in it. I believe there is very little on this boat that isn't original.

Thanks for all of the good advice, guys. I have listed it with the sailingtexas website. I will keep you posted on my progress. Who knows? You may have a new Commander owner for your group soon. I will definitely tell them about you.

General/Off-Topic / Let's try this again...
December 30, 2008, 11:14:23 AM
With no replies I am wondering what I did wrong.
This boat is complete and sound.
Is the price too high? Then what is a reasonable price?
Is there just nobody among you looking for a Commander right now?
Did anyone go to the website to look at the pictures?
You know that guy in the v-berth is just napping, right?
He's not dead, and he doesn't come with the boat.
Would someone please give me some hints.
I need to sell this boat.

I am parting with the Pearson Commander 'Ol' Blew' that I have owned for just 3 short years. It is currently located on Lake Ray Hubbard near Dallas, Tx.

Here is a list of some of the things I have done to this boat:

installed a traveler system
added a Mercury 4hp 2-stroke short shaft
installed new/longer jib sheet tracks
replaced most of the halyards and all of the sheets
installed spinnaker rigging
rebuilt the masthead after the old one cracked
did a bottom job last December
refinished all wooden parts
replaced battery
installed a battery charger/tender (requires 110V power)

The boat has a decent main and a roller furling genoa. It is equipped with a spinnaker and has the original wooden spinnaker pole. This boat is sound and is ready to sail. The only thing a new owner may want to do to this boat is to refinish the deck. It was painted just before I bought it and it is now stained with bird droppings. Pictures of this boat can be seen on www.davidvines.com. Please respond on this thread with any questions or if you want additional pictures. I have not listed this boat anywhere else. I thought I would give the real enthusiasts the first chance.

Technical / Revisiting the headsail issue
June 21, 2008, 05:39:33 PM
We race Commander #229 on a lake in Texas. All we have is the 155 Genoa with the jib track on the toerail. We hold our own on all the runs and reaches but when we have to point most everybody passes us. I need some tips on getting this boat to point higher. I have considered a 110 with the track inboard like the picture above. Would I lose too much speed with the smaller sail or would it increase my pointing ability to more than make up for that?

Technical / Mast tuning
September 09, 2007, 10:28:51 AM
I have considered shorter turnbuckles and have already started my search. Actually I wouldn't mind cutting the wire if one of you says you have had a good experience with the swageless fittings. The pictures make it look so easy I am just wondered if it is really that easy. Someone before me has swapped out the turnbuckles on this boat and I noticed yesterday they aren't all the same length. I put the shorter ones where I needed shorter ones and that helped a lot. So, I'm pretty close. I will look for the DVD, thanks for the tip. I still would like to know the size of the wires.

Technical / Mast tuning

Another question: what size are the wires on the shrouds? I want to be sure and get the correct size swage, whatever kind I end up ordering. I assume they haven't been swapped out and I assume the Ariel and Commander use the same size. Thanks for your help.

Technical / Mast tuning
September 08, 2007, 11:02:39 AM
The only thing we did was take the mast down and put the mast back up and now the stays are too long. The stays aren't swapped, the mast step hasn't changed thickness, the connections at the deck seem very secure. I just can't figure out what just taking down the mast could have changed here. I have looked at everything you guys have mentioned. I am about to resort to cutting wire. Have any of you used those swageless eyes on your shrouds. You can tell I'm trying to fix this without taking the mast back down, huh? How do I get an owner's manual for the Commander? Is it online somewhere? Are the shroud tension settings online somewhere? I really appreciate all of the suggestions from you salty dogs.  _/)  _/)_/)        _/)
