Theis, the USCG and its predecessor (US Life Saving Service) have never made a distinction between commercial and non-commercial vessels when performing search and rescue.  I'm not sure what legislation you're referring to but would be interested in finding out.  I agree with you that, in this case, the cost was probably negligible as the cutter was already at sea; the only impact was probably that it couldn't perform its patrol.  Other SAR ops ARE often very expensive, particularly when they involve aircraft.

Regarding building a compartment to prevent water filling your boat in case of a head problem, take a look at what James Baldwin did to his Triton "Atom."  I think he made exactly the modification you're thinking of.  Its detailed on both his web page and the National Triton Assoc. pages.

Regarding that new C25...I saw one at the Annapolis boat show last month with a guy who was ready to buy one based on what he'd read and seen in photos.  She's completely different when you actually see her.   The cabin looks big in photos but is actually only about 4' from the sole to the overhead.  It was like everything was in miniature (look at the door to the head - it's only about as tall as my waist).  I felt like Gulliver in there.  With the stanchions on top of the cabin and angled down into the cockpit, she's ugly too.  My friend was thoroughly disappointed.

WRT the Alerions, there's an Express 28 in my marina.  She looks better than in the photos.  This one's flag blue and the owner is very meticulous - perfectly coiled docklines, etc.  She's a sight.

Great article...thanks for posting.  I think I may fall into that category of having original standing rigging.  My boat was surveyed about 3 years ago (a year before I bought it), and the rigging checked out OK, but I was unimpressed with the overall quality of the survey.  I'm planning to take the rig down this time next year, have the standing rig surveyed, and replace it if necessary.  In the meantime, I have an admittedly "head in the sand" attitude about the standing rig.  Was planning to give her as thorough an inspection as is possible for an amateur before next season...this'll help.  Thanks again,

Glad to hear the survey came out so well.  So, I take it the surveyor said the decks were properly repaired?  Maybe you could get her in the water and enter her in the GOB regatta on 5 and 11 Oct...?

What do you mean by a "pro" at name changing?   Are you looking for a graphics outfit?  If so, I know a place that'll do a great job on vinyl graphics for a good price.  Did mine...I can send photos if you're interested.

mrgnstrn, got your note and tried to reply but the character limit was too low to say what I wanted:

That movement doesn't really mean anything...boatyards move boats around to make space as they see fit.  She's not in the same place as she was when I first saw her.  They've probably shifted her a dozen times since she first went on the hard.  If you look near the waterline on the starboard side, you'll find a place where the new paint is abraded - owner attributed that to moving the boat too soon after the paint job.

I'm really not trying to badmouth or otherwise dissuade you from this boat.  I think she could be a great deal so long as you're willing to put in the work to fix the decks (if they weren't done correctly).
