This board has a really nice group of folks.  When I posted my comments about Catalina and lead keels, I fully expected to be flamed.  Didn't happen; instead, everyone was nice and witty.  Must be something about the kind of people who are attracted to Alberg boats.

These snide comments about Catalina and lead keels miss the point.  Fin keeled Catalinas have always had lead keels; they didn't "just" discover lead.  I think the ad which caused the misguided snideness was Catalina's way of pointing out that many of the current Euro boats in fact use cast iron, which is cheaper and less effective.

Morris building a 29' boat?  Now, that is a sign of a severely weakening economy.

That wasn't my listing; I was just doing a service to any potential buyers on the board.  Craigslist email addresses expire in about a month, which is what I suspect happened here.

I'm having dinner Wednesday night in Halifax, N.S., with a few executives of one of my clients and the talk turns to sailing.  One says he has recently bought a Pearson Ariel.  Small world, I say, my first boat was a Pearson Commander.  I then ask if he belongs to this list, and he says he does and that he bought his Ariel from Tim Mertinooke.  Now, Tim and I have never met, but I remember quite vividly his posts about his Ariel and his sale of same.  So, Tim, I bring you greetings from Alex.  I am no doubt a stranger to you since I sold my Commander about 5 years ago. I've stayed on the list because I like the people, but I lost my password and so haven't posted in a long time.  Our worthy moderator was kind enough to restore my access today.

So, we live in a world held together, in part, by Pearson boats.

I have an ATN Topclimber, which does not require a second person to use safely.  I can't say that it is particularly easy to get to the top, but what really impressed me was how safe I felt (and I'm not a big fan of heights).  My son once spent over an hour at the top of the mast installing a wind vane.  The Topclimber is not cheap and you can assemble essentially the same unit with climbing gear for less.

I've gotten so used to not having stays that I'm not sure I could go back to a boat with them.  I crewed on a Sabre 402 recently and kept tripping on the stays.

Well, of course it isn't; it's about 3' shorter.  You can't have everything.

I visited my former Commander on Sunday (I confirmed that she was mine).  Alas, she looks better in the photos.  She had been damaged in a storm a few years ago at the hull/deck joint.  While the damage has been repaired, it looks like Bondo applied with the palm of a hand.  Why someone went through the expense and effort of painting the hull without properly fairing it first is beyond me. Nonetheless, probably still worth the asking price.  After all, I bet she's the only Commnder in the world with Matella stanchions.
