Hull #295 is up for sale in WA. We sadly no longer have time to take the boat out and so have decided to sell her.

Listing is here - http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/boa/3834914737.html

How do you deal with the issue on yours?

I thought about physically stopping the rotation, but I haven't been able to take it apart to see how the mechanism works. I'd like for whatever we do to lock the steering to be able to be undone later if we need to sell the engine.

Quote from: c_amos;21460I have the same problem with mine.

THat friction screw is tightening the shaft against a nylon sleeve.  To make matters worse, it is nylon pressing against a greased shaft... so slowing the rate it turns is about all it is going to do unless you were to VERY carefully drill a slight depression (detent) where you wanted it to stop... risky.

We've got a 2008 Tohatsu 6hp (the 25" extra-long shaft version). It's a great engine so far, except for the lack of a steering lock. There's a steering friction adjustment bolt, but it doesn't actually lock the steering. When the engine is on it tends to wobble over to one side even when the adjustment bolt is tightened all the way down. Short of some sort of bracing attached to the well or transom any ideas? Anyone else encountered this problem?

We prefer to back the boat out of the slip by hand and then motor forwards out of the marina, so the ability to lock the steering is pretty important to us. Also having the motor to stay put while we're motoring long distances so we can steer via the boat's tiller a little easier.

Found this on craigslist.

When we were moored up there I think we were 1 of 3 or so Ariels, pretty sure I've seen this one up there.

Nice to hear someone else with the ultralong loves it.  We have not got to use it yet since our new slip is going to require driving in reverse slot.  Also we are sanding and oiling all our exterior teak since someone varnished it

actually got it from boaters world.  Had to pay shipping but we didn't plan to buy a new engine and they allowed us to finance it.

So we are getting the Tohatsu 6hp Ultra Long it's been ordered now we wait for it to show.  Some asked for pics of the old totally dead engine so here are a few.  As you can see it was in a bad way.

Think we are going with the ultra long shaft found it for 1400 without tax and ship and we can do payments.  While we wait for delivery we are doing our teak work.

We liked Anacortes just to long a drive to get to sail.  Now she is closer and we can sail her more and start all the TLC she needs and deservers.  Have you checked out the Ariel that sold for like 12k 2 years ago on the end dock?  The one with the nice teak cockpit may?  That is our end goal.

So one of the first things we did after buying Katydid was to move her to her new temp home.  This was a chore.  Our first try ended in us going an hour out and taking two hours to get back to our starting dock with no less then 15 engine failures.  Let me explain she came with a Johnson 15hp 1974 engine.  I'm not sure the engine has been out of the water let alone worked on for over 4 years.  We had a friend loan us an engine to do the move.  We took the Johnson to a shop and were told 'I wouldn't put money into that"  So we now will be getting a new one.  We are looking at the tohatsu 6hp since people here love it.  I'll throw up a few pics of the dead engine later.
