Ok all you nissan 4-stroke 6 hp owners...

Anyone know the torque for the propeller shaft nut?

Finally bit the bullet after my Yamaha 9.9 gave it up and decided to go for Nissan. Hope it works out in these parts. Heck, even the 9.9 had to struggle against the tides so I guess just have to work around them and enjoy the lack of smoke and noise while doing it.

I got the 7" pitch prop and thought I'd get it on there but don't have access to a manual yet for the torque info.

I thought perhaps I'd epoxy and pop-rivet a square socket to the top of the motor cover via which I could engage a shaft from above the lazerette hatch. Attached to the shaft would be a small steering wheel with which to spin the motor through its 180 degree turning radius. Also working on ideas for external shift & throttle control. The throttle shoud be easy cause the cables already exist in the OB tiller. The shift .... well... any ideas? ( need to be able to shift throughout the full 180 deg.) hmmm..

I've put the question of using dry gas type products to eliminate water problems to two people and have received the same answer from both. Don't use dry gas in a 2 stroke outboard as it interferes with the lubrication of the oil/gas mix.

One guy is pretty engine savvy and the other was  a counter man at a marine hardware store / tohatsu dealer.

So I'd suggest seeking further for an answer before dumping in the alcohol to dry up the water.

Guess you've been there...

Now if I can only free up the bolt at the aft end of the boom, strip off all the eyes, jamb cleats fairleads, turning blocks, and cleats I can give the boom a whirl....

Unless it is a non furling boom and someone figured it was cost effective to install a very looooooooong bolt with an arrowhead on the forward end rather than a short bolt captured firmly in the end cap.

OK, I'll take the risk.... My initial reaction to the idea of having to take the bolt off at the back (aft) end of the boom to get at the arrowhead thingy was....WHAT??!! Sorry, but it is a complete puzzle to me as to what effect that action would have other than to free up the bolt and butterfly.  From what pics I saw on Rig-Rite a year or so ago, I assumed ( makes an ass of U & me - word), The arrowhead (eye) was a short spring loaded shaft that the boom can rotate around when pulled aft enuff to release the arrow head base from its capturing socket in fwd boom cap casting. If the shaft is somehow connected to the after end of the boom ..... How can this boom furling action take place?

Am I missing something here?  Help!

I've seen the gooseneck end fitting on the Rig-Rite web site. In fact it was then that I found out that the boom on my ariel was in fact a furling type. They have the center eye which in fact is just a spring loaded post affair replaceble on its own or I believe they have the whole gooseneck end fitting as well as the saddle. In fact I think they have the right size boom extrusion too.

My "eye" was worn nearly clean through and the saddle was also badly worn. A friend welded up the hole in the eye which I then redrilled to proper dimension and I milled out a new saddle from a piece of scrap aluminum which I had pack-ratted away for 23 years!!! Pack-Rats rule!!

Good luck getting the end fitting out of the boom.

Finally got a few pics to post of "NOETA". The first three are taken in Maine's Passamaquoddy Bay.

Man!! I feel more fortunate with every post I read re stepping the mast.

I take the mast down every season for the winta & while also interested in the tabernacle concept , am quite happy to be able to avail myself of the use of the hydraulic crane mounted at the south end of the Eastport breakwater. Anyone who can push the on button and push/pull a few levers can use it. Combine that with a 20 foot tidal range and mast stepping becomes a very cheap proposition. In fact one only needs an overhang off a pier and some tackle and you could dispense with the crane entirely!

Had a great sail yesterday and had a young finback whale sound directly under us right here in Cobscook Bay !
