General/Off-Topic / Sails
October 07, 2021, 09:11:03 PM
Hi Kent, I was a happy sailor when my wife bought a new jib sail for Pathfinder, for Christmas. I found that the 120 was ideal for winds 8 - 18 knots. She knew I wanted a deck sweeper to keep the pressure low in the high range. Plus it was enough sail to keep you moving in the light range. As far as single hand it was much easier that the 155 and I found it very easy to tack by myself. Couple of wraps and maybe a quick crank if I needed to point. I hope this helps........ed

General/Off-Topic / Need a rudder?

Hey Scott, I have had a look at the new rudder being built. It looks great. I know there are a number of people here that would enjoy seeing the progress being made and the method that you have chosen. I would encourage you to share any pics that you might have and also pics of the old rudder (both the wood problem and the corrosion of the old shaft) .

Welcome to the Ariel club. Look forward to hearing your story. I have somewhat of a connection to Sprit Wind. My wife {then girlfriend} was a previous owner back in the 80’s. At the time it was a San Francisco boat. We can share stories later but I can tell you that the little yacht has been through a lot and is a survivor

Three cheers for the skipper of Solstice. Well done and thank you from a past participant. I hope this does not mean that you are going to get stuck on the dock without a vessel in your future. Maybe this means that skipper Bill will have to bring ol' yeller out of her slip and fly the race flag.

Any results..?

We raced the #75 boat for many years and watched him win many many races. I feel a key to his success was knowing the SF Bay better than most and a crew that was with him for over twenty years. Of course with Don at the helm it was almost impossible to beat.

Thanks for doing the leg work to put this together each year for the group. As a past competitor I wish more people and boats could/would show up for this event. The Ariel/Commander are great little yachts and without people willing to come out and join, the day is coming I’m afraid that the organization that supports all of us is just going to fade away.
This little regatta has been going for many decades and has always been about the social aspect of the sailing more that the competition. We had as many as twelve and more boats show up for this event, and they would come from all over. I can recall even having people sail with us on Pathfinder that came from New York  and Chicago.  Local boats came from all over northern CA.
This boat class is important to the history of yacht design and class racing to just let it fade away. I encourage you, if able please join in with the fun. My home port of Santa Cruz coined the phrase of “Fast is Fun”, how about the Hoppe Regatta use the words “FREE and FUN" . Have a great weekend all……..ed
