I have #131, Sea Smoke, that I have owned for 15 years or so, and I don't want to give her up, but she's been on the hard in Scituate MA since 2010, and I'm in Lawrence KS. If I had a trailer, I'd move her here, and sale on our inland lake (Lake Perry). As it is, it seems like it would cost north of $5,000 to move her by commercial service. A Trailer would also be more expensive than her value. Any ideas?

I downloaded the MORC Measurement doc to try to set Sea Smoke up with a rating. I'm a little stumped by some of the data that they're asking for, and since I'm 1500 miles from the boat, it's a bit tough to measure them. If anyone is interested in helping out, I'll attach the Worksheet.

That's the one I'll replace with. The original had a very old and corroded chain securing it. Pretty wild weather, bow bonucing up and down on the sea, cover must have taken a good jolt and busted the chain, and away it went.

Thanks, Ebb, it's not the vent cowl, I've found several replacements from different vendors, as Deck Pipes instead of Hawse Hole. It is the passage to the forepeak for the rode and chain. We lost the original in Bigelow Bight, off the Isle of Shoals.

Sea Smoke's anchor rode hawse hole cover chain eroded, and whilst moving her from Rockland, ME to Scituate,MA, the cover lept into the sea! Anyone have good ideas on how or where to replace it?

Walker Bay 8. Tows politely, easy to move around, rows well, tough, can handle SWMBO and myself. I'd like to figure out a way to get it aboard, but having towed it around the Maine coast for 8 years, I'm not much bothered by pulling it behind. In a good rainstorm, it does collect water, but it's pretty easy to haul it up on deck with a handybilly and dump the water out.

I am floating a trial balloon about chartering Sea Smoke from Rockland, ME. I'm interested in any input that other members might have about whether this is an advisable plan of action, I only get back east 4 or times per summer, and she should be sailed more regularly. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance, Thomas Howe.

I'm getting ready to repower Sea Smoke, and am leaning very heavily towards a Johnson 6 HP with a 20' Shaft. I think that this should have the right combination of weight and power that I need, the manual indicates that many use between a 4 and an 8 HP. I don't plan to motor for extended lengths of time, but might have to at times. WIll this motor do the job for me, will it push an Ariel at a reasonable clip? Inquiring minds want to know!

I've considered the Porta Potti, but the boat may be out for several days at a time, and the idea of sleeping in the V-Berth with 5 days of waste lurking just below makes me a little shy. Also, I'm not sure that the person who will be managing the boat would be pleased with the prospect of dealing with the emptying tasks. I know that to have a proper system installed might run some dough, but I plan to keep this boat for q while, and the benefits of having it done correctly might outweigh the downside.
 Anyway, I appreciate the comments and hope for more input. Still sailing in Kansas,(60 degrees predicted for this weekend!), Thomas Howe.

I am considering putting Sea Smoke into a charter fleet in Rockland, ME for next summer. There are 3 things that I need to do to get her into compliance, 2 are easy and the 3rd seems to be more difficult. I need to update the Depth sounder, the rocks under the Penobscot Bay have a tendency to be hard! This isn't much trouble, it should be done pretty soon. I need to install a high volume bilge pump. Sea Smoke is quite dry, the current rotary bilge pump removes the little water that makes it's way into the bilge. If I am allowing others to use her, however, I think a Gusher or similar is in order. I plan to mount this in the Starboard cockpit locker, with the handle coming out just behind the bridgedeck. This should be operable for  the cockpit or with a bit of leaning, from the cabin.
 The stickler is updating the sanitation facilities. Sea Smoke currently has a marine head with a direct overboard discharge,. The coast Guard frowns on this, and if she is in charter, I'll need to bring her into compliance. Has anyone retrofitted their Ariel or Commander to meet current guidelines? Wher does on locate a Hholding tank, what size is appropriate, Y Valve installed, what kind of sewage pump etc., etc., etc. I look forward to hearing any ideas that this esteemed group might have.
