Tim,

I am still reading through your original post so forgive me if you already answered this question, but doesn't opening up the bilge like that increase the static head your bilge pump needed to overcome?

Commander Pete,

I hope you don't mind, but I put that last pic you posted (the splashy one) on my desktop.  Not only do I think that it is a great picture but it reminds my wife how nice a Commander would look if we owned one.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In the sprit of a previous thread concerning handy tools to have, I propose creating a thread of handy links to have.

Let there be no debate, this site is a fount of knowledge unparalleled on the web, but I have noticed from time to time people making mention of other sites that they found useful.  I just thought that having a consolidated list of such sites would prove useful.

To start the ball rolling here is my contribution:

General/Off-Topic / Ariel for sale on ebay

Wow, just over 2 hours to go on this auction and there has been some bidding going on.  After 4 bids, the current winner is in for $300.  Hopefully they are going to try to fix her.

Great ideas.

Another idea I had (although it is a little more out there) would be to design a ROV on the cheap.  Hook up some kind of camera to a remote control submarine model and send that down to inspect.

I think this would fail the cost effectiveness test for individual owners, but might be something worth offering as a service to boat owners.  Who knows, maybe I can rig something and use it to save up for a Commander?:)

ebb... two words, otter box.  These waterproof boxes would do the trick with just about any conventional camcorder.  Just send it down, and then pull it up and check the footage.

Just a thought.

Quote from: Reader;16492The trailer will be more expensive than the boat's initial cost.

Here is a trailer for a reasonable price.

I have been watching this one for a while.  I haven't gone up to see it in person (I live in Newport) since my wife and I just had our second daughter.

The other problem is that I am a few months away from buying a house in Va Beach and moving down there.

ComNavWifeLant has green lighted the purchase of a boat once we are established down there.  Hopefully there will be a Commander looking for a new home at that time.

Quote from: Lucky Dawg;16418I'd also suggest a new thread for members to post one or two representative pictures of their yacht. I think a single thread of glamor shots would be great to browse - a representative parade of ships. I'm happy to start the thread if that sounds appealing to others, but I'd wait till farther down the roll call to post Lucky Dawg. Rather, I'd invite our elder (in time served on this forum, that is) yachtsmen to post first. Takers?

Granted I don't have an A/C yet, but I think that is a great idea.  If nothing else, it would let me scroll the pictures across the screen for my wife in an attempt to get her to green light a purchase.;)

As for the "hunting" trip for hulls, I think the important info would be a picture and location.  Hull number and owner info would be a bonus since it would be harder to obtain.  As for the purpose of this exercise, I agree the ultimate goal would be to expand the association membership.  I know for me, it might also help track down a specific Ariel.  My grandparents were the original owners of hull 288 and actively sailed her for years in Long Island Sound.  I wonder what became of her?

Another point of contention:  Does finding a for sale ad online count?

Quote from: bill@ariel231;16408I'm for the date of posting and leave the rest to the honor system...

bonus points for getting a new member! ;)

(i've got a claim on spotting A-250 and A-201 on the water and A-18 and A-409 abandon on jackstands)

There is also a Commander on a mooring by the Hyatt in Newport.

How would a person "prove" the sighting?  Hold a local newspaper up in the foreground?  I am not making fun, I am serious.

I like the idea.  I know there are a bunch in/around Newport, but I have a feeling a lot of them are registered and probably major contributors in the forums.

Nice Bill.  I just checked it out and didn't find any spelling mistakes.;)

What do you think about putting some line drawings/pictures in there?  I know there are a few nice ones  here.
