Sailing and Events / Lee rail down scares my wife!
July 06, 2005, 06:36:08 PM
I think she's a Stink-pot rider at heart, but she does like the nice days!

With regards to dousing the jib or a chute for that matter, try a sleeve, several companys make them, North has one I think. As for the main 120' or so of 1/4" line and some rope-work will make you a nice "Dutchman" that you can haul up with your topping lift (Or you could rig new hardware if you want them separate.)

I need to rig preventers myself! :D

Technical / Skene Chocks for Ariel?
July 05, 2005, 06:22:39 PM
:( Does anybody know of a supplier for these? The newest edition lists the manufacturer as no longer having them available. I tried to order them from ABI (Their very close!) but ABI's supplier is not making them any more either.

Technical / Boxing the Compass
July 05, 2005, 06:13:47 PM
To "Swing" your compass {Unless you've changed it Ariel's have a magnetic one.} anchor fore and aft, then convert your anchor lines to springs by connecting them outside of your stays taking a turn on both winches. Set a magnetic compass (Should be a good one!) on the cabin top centerline. Write down the readings listing both the portable and the boat's. Turn the boat one point (32 degrees) by turning one winch (you may have to release the turn on the other winch) again write down the readings, the difference is the primary deviation; back up to the first reading, both compasses should be the same as the initial reading. Go past your initial reading one point, check the compasses again, write it down, the difference between the two compasses is your deviation. If the difference port to starboard is not the same amount then your compass is probably in need of replacement because of internal wear and a table of deviations would be meaningless. You cannot use GPS to swing your compass since it uses polar stellar coordinates giving an adjusted offset (Thank the US Military) mercator projection which is notmally three meters off (Aprox. 1 NM after traveling 10 NM).

Technical / Broken Mainsail Sheet Pin
July 05, 2005, 05:34:44 PM
:o Hi Mike;

Thanks for the answering post! The sheet didn't come off the sheeve, I had the sheet pulled to the mast utility chock with the end tied off on the sheet's line, the wire to the sheet hardware came unpinned in the wind and the wire ran up but didn't come through the sheeve.

Since I also had other issues with the mast I had a local yard with a very good reputation (David Beaton, Manaloking, NJ) deal with the whole list.

Thanks again!

Technical / Broken Mainsail Sheet Pin
June 18, 2005, 07:53:38 PM
:( I thought I lashed the Durn Thing down!
During a recent Tstorm the pin on my mainsail sheet sheared/came loose & the jumping wire ran up the mast.

Has anybody winched themselves up? Will the sheeves hold a 200+# guy?

The jib sheet jumping wire is 1/8 wire, but its old like the MS sheet was.
Could I jury rig the main using it to get to a local Marina w/sheerlegs?
