Technical / steering failure
May 31, 2002, 06:30:38 AM
leaving marina could barely steer one  way back to slot1/2 arc almost nothing the other almost fully intact. Angled back to slip.eventually pulled boat mainly due to sound of prop hitting apeture. Out of water, marks on rudder, also notice on one side of skeg a small block of fbg which stops rudder fromover turning, other side has none , prop hits on this side in past. Remove cap & find NO key andhead not lined up key way to keyway. This I can fix.....But have gears or clutch been damaged...Last few minutes preceding failure hitting sound was more like metal on metat!!!!????  Will have westerbeke deisel man look at it! Comments on this and rudder shaft replacement very welcome!

Technical / loss of steering
May 30, 2002, 06:30:44 PM
After loss of steering leaving marina pulled boat found no keyunder cap?!  Experienced much grinding in apeture. Have purchased 1/4 in bronze stock for new key.  Found an afixed fbg small brick which put next to rudder stopped range of motion on that side alone. Rudde r looks peevely, but.... drift pins?  Shaft looks rough but hate to take rudder off to inspect it!  any comments, suggestions gratefully welcomed!! Still not sure of effect of grinding on prop & gears  Will have mechanic look at it and clutch!!

Technical / steering failure
May 25, 2002, 01:01:11 PM
lost steering on way out of marina a few weeks ago!!?  Rudder seemed okay after a year on hard. Had restuffed rudder shaft since it was taking water up the shaft on initial run from Annapolis to home port of Havre De Grace MD. Symptoms of failure  i say prop hittig rudder steering ineffectual leaving Marina: Right side of 180degrees of motion ok, left side had no control except at last 15 degrees of tiller arc, Also  made sound like prop hitting in rudder appeture. Had to sit in slip without further trys for 3 weeks due to marina repair, tried again: in reverse gear wife says metal grinding noise,I think prop eating rudder! Pulled it back into slip then did get grinding noise in forwar.this  is a27 horse westerbeke diesel replacement for atomic 4, long before my ownership. have been towed & will be pulled again in a few days. same steering problem without engine had just enough steering to keep ariel 121 behind tow boat. Will advise. Would appreciate any comment thus far. Thanks!!
