General/Off-Topic / Spreader Tubes
March 24, 2005, 09:47:43 AM
lot of ways to go but do to water caused wood swelling
wood ain't a good idea for tips

plastic is better if you can find a machine shop to turn an end peice
or carve / sand / drill-turn  make one your self out of nylon or F/G or carbonfiber
or alloy or SS strong but heavy but could be drilled hollow

or the wierd way hunt a table leg end cap or a thread spool to cut in half that will work

or just notch the tube end or use a short SS tube to put the notch in on the very end note  SS tube could be inside or outside the alloy spreader
I have used thin walled SS tubes with notched ends
and a drilled hole for wire to safty wire the stay to the notch
wouldNOT do a long voyage off shore BUT FINE FOR A DAY SAILOR
with that kind of set up

or you can shimm the standerd sized tubes or ends to fit
beer cans make desent shimm stock

Technical / 4 stroke vs 2 stroke questions
February 24, 2005, 07:19:41 AM
flooding and drag are the two reasons we have glassed over the well on other boats and went to spring loaded bracket on the stern
pluss you start it in the up position eazyer and drop the motor once running
and back up and out is a simple painless lever pull

we loved britsh sea gulls but they are rare now do they still make them???

my yamaha 1 banger 4 hp 4 stroke lays on it's side fine and drains the water fast but more of a dinky
motor then a sail boat mover

if you donot need to go far or fast like just a docking motor
a mini-kota elec-trick will work, they are light and small too
but suck the juice out of your battery fast if run long and SLOW too

Technical / Dropping the mast by hand
January 15, 2005, 04:19:51 PM
a few other ideas if there is a near by bridge you can get next to without much current or boat trafic

once the mast is down get a double plate double hinged step
should be under $50 as they were $30 some years ago when I bought mine

or build a proper tabernacal out of SS or heavy alloy or even steel if you like to paint
two triangles about a foot by 18"  and a bottom
and a big SS bolt for a pivot pin
should cost  less than a $100 + welding
even in SS if you can buy scrap SS localy

then you can rase or lower singlehanded on a whim
