General/Off-Topic / Richard in Martinez?

Hi French:

Alas I sold my Ariel, I kept it at Fortmans in Alameda.  I still work in Martinez, but now live in Walnut Creek.  Bought an Islander 28, it is at Fortmans.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you faithful Ariel people, I still like to read your dispatches!

General/Off-Topic / Half Moon Bay

French:

Here's my memories from a couple of SF to Half Moon Bay trips in the 1970's.  Leaving SF, approaching the Golden Gate Bridge, the wind will be fierce, funneling directly in towards alcatraz and Berkeley.  Mysteriously, just past the bridge, the wind will be much less.  (No funnel I guess).  Going down to HMB, the wind will be strong aft.  The HMB harbor is actually called pillar POint, near the town of Princeton.  check your charts, as the direct way in to the naked eye will take you over boat crushing rocks, you have to go south for a while and then come in to the north to find the harbor entrance.  In the evening, it is always drizzly and drippy there, the decks will be wet in the morning.  In the morning, there is apt to be a lot of fog on the shore, not clearing until around 11 or noon, with not much wind.  Then the wind will come up, pretty strong from the NW, so you will be beating into it all the way to Ocean Beach in SF, where you will have light winds until under the GG Bridge, where you will get the strong funnel winds again.

Havde a good trip!

General/Off-Topic / marina insurance

My marina required an insurance rider, so I ended up going with BoatUS.  They did require a survey (not a bad idea anyway), and then required that some of the identified work be done, but the annual rate is 125 (no inboard).

General/Off-Topic / F.S. Ariel #336

Go sailing on the SF Bay tomorrow in a classic, full keel Pearson Ariel. Great first Bay sailboat, stable, forgiving, sails great; able to handle windy days on the Bay, but sails really well in light wind too. Classic Alberg design in fiberglass; built in 1965, before the days of thin fiberglass. Purchased for $3000 in 2004, plus over $1500 invested. Willing to sell at a low price so that someone can enjoy this boat; I have bought a bigger sailboat. Has newer jib, serviceable mainsail and genoa. Spinnaker and spinnaker pole available; would need some rigging. Basic small interior with four berths and 5'10" headroom. Has sink, water tank, porta potty, needs stove, needs new cushions, no icebox. No radio or bilge pump. Has battery charger, wiring needs some work. Exterior and interior need cosmetic work. One cabin window is cracked. Upgrades in 2004-05: roller furling jib, new head stay, new back stay, new lazy jacks, new turnbuckles, new seacocks, replaced most running rigging. Last hauled out and surveyed in 2004; appraised at $3000. All lines aft for single handing. Older outboard, runs well. Sailable now, plenty of projects to work on to reach its full potential.

Motivated owner; have bought new larger boat, must sell - make an offer!

Call (925)372-3525 weekdays; (925) 370-7970 nights and weekends.

Sailing picture below is sister ship.

Berthed at Fortman's in Alameda; berth can be transferred; currently about $160 per month.

Interior pictures attached.  Note that bolt heads on the bulkhead are from previous owner bolting a large steel plate to the forward side to stop sag under mast step.  Not pretty, but effective.

Sailing and Events / saving log entries
July 26, 2005, 03:27:31 PM
On my computer, you can save a log entry by highlighting the text (hold the mouse button down and scroll down), then go to edit and press copy.  Then open a new Word document, go to edit and press paste.  Then save the new word document.

The mast rests on a shaped disc of plywood that sits on the deck.  The plywood tends to delaminate from weathering over the years.  I have stailized mine by dosing it thoroughly with Git Rot.  There was no rot, but Git Rot is formulated to soak in to all the little nooks and crannies.  Then I filled the outer cracks etc with Marine Tex.  Next step is to sand it all down and paint it.  Lot less expensive than unstepping.

General/Off-Topic / hardware patterns

Since the school got them as a donation, and no one there seems to want to do anything with them, I surmise they might be willing to part with them at a discount -- maybe $500 or so. However, assuming we could all come up with that, we would still have the cost of getting the castings made, and I don't know if that cost would be at all reasonable.
