There were some "classes" with only a few boats - would be good to see more than two boats in one of these races (we tried to make it 3)   Any idea about how many active commanders and Ariels there are on the bay?

Looks like Nemesis and crew missed out on a good sail.   Carberator problems on the ole outboard made it a no go for us.

We were able to sail in the Plastic Classic on the 17th.   Nemesis took 3rd in the PHRF-non spinaker fleet, and 18th overall.  Surprise to us because we seemed so slow compared to the other Cammmander out there - Mephisto Cat was on a roll - first in the PHRF-non spinaker fleet, and first overall.   Nice.

Looks like the stars are aligning with maintenance work and we will be able to make the race.   Not sure about the Awards Gathering however.

See you there -

Your boat looks much better in the water...

Good sailing,

Thanks Mike -
These are the original Tuffblock winches my dad put on the boat so many years ago.  At one point the top cap became unsound, so we replaced the bottom plate of the cap with stainless.
The coamings were replaced some 25 years ago - so these are new/old.  They are slightly higher than the originals - helpfull in keeping dry in the SF bay, which is often very wet sailing.   They have 6 or 7 (I lost count) coats of Epiphanes on them, as does everything else.

I noticed the simularity between our boats as well - they are only a few builds apart.

Right now we are in Brisabane 1 dock over from Portugal Princess.  We are however looking at a couple of slips in Gashouse Cove or Marina Green this weekend.

The "apendage" is a step - comes in handy climbing in and out in rough seas.  There is another on the board above in the interior as well, and yes the grating is for ventilation.

Hello –

I would like to introduce Nemesis (Commander 151) to the board on behalf of my big brother Jeff and I.
Nemesis has been in the Sullivan family since our Dad (Jerry Sullivan) bought her from Jack O'Neal, who was selling boats in Santa Cruz back in the mid 60's.    (Yep, we are the original owners and know every scratch and dent on her.)
A year or so later, she was moved up to the SF Bay, and she has been here  ever since.  Over the years she has  been raced, served as a vacation home every summer in the Delta, did 8 years of patrol for the CG Auxiliary (she's towed boats much larger than her) was a model for the CGA Boating Skills and Seamanship and Sailing texts in the mid 70s and early 80s.  (*If you have one of the these hanging around on a shelf, you can see my brothers and I crewing while our dad took the photos.) and otherwise just been kickin' around the bay.
For some time now, Nemesis has been in the water, but sadly, has sat unused, in mothball, as we all got married, bought houses and started  families.  Money has been tight, and only recently have we been able to completely refit her, pulling bits a pieces out of the garage and putting her back together.
Some of the work that my big brother Jeff, our kids and I have completed in the past few months are: replaced all running and standing rigging,  haul out, striped and repainted/re-varnished  the interior, ordered a new main from Pineapple sails, and refinished all the bright work.  (replacing some unsalvageable pieces in the process) There are still some things to do, such as repairing the electrical system and replacing the handrails, but we can do these in time.
This Saturday, after a lot of hard (and sometimes unexpected) work, we are taking her out for the first time in 14 years.   This is a fitting continuation of life for a boat that has been such a great friend over the years.
I am attaching a few photos of her as she sits today.  (Hopefully I got the sizing correct)  Hope to see some of you out on the bay.

I was recently in a boatyard on Lake Texoma (Texas side) and ran across a Commander  - number 18 -  getting her bottom painted.  There seem to be Commanders and Ariels everywhere you look.  In commanders alone, there are more than few in the sf bay.  One in Balena Isle Marina in Alameda (sad, but she floats) 3 active in Brisbane, 2 in Berkeley at the Cal sailing club 1 in the marina next to Svens on the estuary, and I am sure more I have not seen in person.   does the registry show the number of our boats on the bay?
thanks,
Patrick

My rails were sitting around waiting their turn for refinishing, so here you go.   These are the mohagany rails that came on C151 40 years ago.
(See attached photos)   something to note is the shot from the end - it shows the angle of the cabin in relationship to vertical, and also shows the crve of the cabin front to back, although I'm not sure if they were made that way or were applied straight and they kept the "memory" of the curve.

Technical / Deck finish?
June 02, 2004, 04:20:03 PM
I'm hoping not to have to go there - there is a 2' round soft spot in the fore deck, but I think this is related to impact vs. a wet core -   The rest of the deck and cabin are rock solid.
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever considered using a spray on polyurethane coating like "Rhino" truck bed lining?  It is "permanent", available in custom colors and non-slip textures, and pretty much bullet proof.    (No, I'm not a salesman, just saw it on a truck and wondered how well it would work for replacement decking.)

Technical / Deck finish?

Hello all -
This is my first post here, and happy to see such a great support group for these boats.   I grew up on this boat, and am starting the process of restoring her.
My Commander has the pale green deck color, and the foredeck  has faded to the point that the brush strokes from the application are visible.   Does anyone know the best way to remedy this so it will:
A: Not lose the non-skid surface (I like the basket weave pattern)
B: Match the existing color
C: Last another 39 years (I hate to add one more thing to redo every couple of years. )

Look forward to your replies.
