I am so sorry for your loss and grateful for your dad's support for our community.

This place has been so helpful to so many people... I do hope it can continue as I am sure Bill would want.

Thank you Kurt for your offer to step in.  I am willing to help in whatever capacity I might be able to.   So much wisdom in this forum, I hope it can be preserved.

It’s sad when it happens... more sad for the rest of us to miss what was being typed.

Come back ebb!

I found the Link by searching YouTube, here it is;

I am glad he made it, I agree with his initial assessment, but I prefer to have more then one anchor....  I rode out hurricane  Noel aboard Faith, my Manson Supreme had the load but my fortress(s) were set as a backup just in case...  I agree with mis statements about the humming, vibrating, and banging of the wind....  really much more loud then one might expect!

Technical / has anyone ever hung a 9.9 off the stern?
September 06, 2016, 04:22:27 PM
The majority of Ariel's had an outboard in a well, the conversion is pretty streight forward.  The part you will likely want to focus on is the construction of the well.  There are many pictures here.

It is widely held that these boats don't like the stern bracket for a couple of reasons.  First the weight hung so far aft really upsets the trim...  Even being 2' aft of the position in the well makes a big difference.

Second, and maybe more importantly, the controls are very difficult to operate because of the lazarette....  You are stretching pretty far back, and down....  A recipe for falling overboard at worst, and cumbersome at best.

I have sailed an Alberg 30 with an outboard in the transom and it was a real handful to dock!

The 9.9 is a little big and heavy, but many folks have used them.  I delivered Ariel Spirit (#3) when it was purchased it hAd a Merc 9.9 2 stroke, it was replaced by a 9.9 4 stroke.  Neither moved it any better then the Yamaha 6 and Tohatsu 6 that I use on my own Ariel (#226).

Technical / Not enough air in outboard motor well
July 08, 2016, 09:17:48 AM
Ariel Spirit (#3) had a bilge blower plumbed to force air in while the lazy-rat hatch was closed.  It worked, but drew a lot of current!  I also had water enter the boat in a storm on the Chesapeake (hose passed through the aft bulkhead).

I think the 'hose on the exhaust' trick is a better option.

General/Off-Topic / F.S. Ariel #3, "Ariel Spirit"

Ariel Spirit has changed hands again.

After helping her move from MD to NC for her last owner, I again got involved with her and sailed her to Pensacola.

See Delivering Ariel Spirit Again... for details of that trip.

She has been very well kept by Brittany, the remainder of the decks were recored, her bright work was kept up and she got new canvas covers, and new interior...

I had posted her on craigslist, but was waiting for some pictures of the work done from the owner before posting here here...

Well, she was bought and sailed out of Pensacola bound for Fairhope, AL this week.

Wade, her new owner plans to live aboard and cruise her.  I invited him to the site when he was looking at her, and I hope he registers her with the association soon.

She is a great boat, and it has been a privilege to sail her and assist in finding her a new home once again!

Wade, if you read this; Fair winds!  I hope to hear from you soon.
