Technical / outboard motor remote controls
October 02, 2002, 01:04:37 AM
On 101 I have a remote throttle/clutch mounted on the right side of the cockpit well, about a foot to a foot and a half forward of the forward lazerette bulkhead. It is pretty much out of the way, is easy to use while standing at the helm. Works great!

Check a few posts back in this thread, I did post my opinion on the CDI. Good luck.

Technical / Roller Furler

I installed a CDI furler 2 years ago(with the roller bearing option) and have had no problems with it. It was relatively inexpensive, fairly easy to install by myself and one friend, simple to operate, andhas worked well.

I have had some resposnses for my adds for Ariel 101, but she needs some work. If I have any more and they are looking for something ready to go, I can pass your info on. How much are you asking, where is she, etc.

The title on #101 says it was built in 1963, also.

Technical / Deck Delamination / Core Problems
May 20, 2002, 10:22:47 AM
OK. I am looking into various options for new core material, and how to obtain them. Hoping not to have to drive 70 miles(one way) just to measure for the thickness, do any of you recall the thickness of the material you  used? Mike, it looked like that WesCore was one piece, obviously flexible enough to conform to the slight curve of the deck. I am looking at getting nidacore, but that may take a while. If using a plywood, can anyone tell me if it also goes in one piece, or in many smaller pieces? How small? other thoughts? Thanks again!

Technical / Deck Delamination / Core Problems
May 17, 2002, 11:40:50 AM
Was the space(thickness) of the deck filled with the balsa core fairly uniform, or did it require various thicknesses of whatever wood filler was used. I haven't skinned her yet, and am trying to do a liitle planning ahead. I agree, I am tending to steer away from balsa, and am looking at other wood and/or just glassing it or filling with some epoxy filler. Anybody see any problems with either method?

Technical / Deck Delamination / Core Problems
May 16, 2002, 04:50:14 PM
I need to repair some rotten core on the foredeck portside (about 2.5 ft by on 1 foot)   and side deck on the starboard side (almost the same size). Also some slight delamination on the starboard side deck. If I remove some skin, where does one get the balsa or is there better wood to use? Does it come in various thicknesses? Can you just use some type of epoxy filler. I have read the previous ideas and it helps. Thanks in advance. Bob

Technical / Handrails ARIEL
May 13, 2002, 10:15:31 AM
Replacing the handrails out on the cabin top - outside. Apparently they were parked in the garage too close to the garbage when I was out of town. They have gone to the dump. I believe they were 4-loop handrails, but had different measurements than the standard ones in the marine catalogs. Does anyone have the length of the handrails handy? has anyone replaced theirs with the standard issue from the major marine stores? does anyone have any better suggestions? Thanks!

Technical / Out Board Plug
February 13, 2002, 12:15:46 PM
I would also be interested in getting a new outboard plug made. I had a friend help me doing some things on Petral. He wanted to learn some things about sailboats. One thing he learned was that love stinks. oops, I mean plugs sink. His heart was in the right place. Oh well.
One question. Is it likely that one size plug fits all?

Technical / interior-paint,laminate,veneer?
November 21, 2001, 04:46:07 PM
I plan to start re-doing the interior this winter. Probably going to paint over the lovely formica cabinetry. Is this a good idea--does it last? what kind of paint is best? any tips on proceeding would be appreciated if you have done this! Any thoughts on other ideas such as replacing with wood paneling or veneer?
By the way, Mr. Airing, your interior pictures on the yahoo site are inspirational. She is beautiful!

Technical / Roller Furling
November 11, 2001, 08:34:41 AM
I've had a CDI furler for about a season and a half (Lake Erie). It has performed well and I have had no problems with it so far. I put  it on myself with the help of a friend (we did take the mast down to do it, but I was told that is not absolutely necessary). It took me
an afternoon to do it. I did spring for the added roller bearing assembly. Installing it was easy, the directions were pretty good, and any questions I had were welcome when I called CDI for any kind of help. The system is basic and seems to work well. The sail rolls in and out easily and the boat still sails good, points pretty good, and I am pleased with it. Keep in mind I have no previous experience with other brands. I do have a friend who purchased a Harken about the same time for a similar size boat and has since sailed with me-- says if he had it to do again he might go with the CDI.
Good Luck!

Technical / Mileage
October 23, 2001, 10:08:13 AM
Thanks for all the mileage help, everyone! The trip is done and I still don't know how far she'll go on a tank, or even a gallon.  Had a good wind, let my 12 year old son play hooky from school and made the trip averaging almost 5 kts pointing pretty close the whole way. Never tacked once (twenty some miles) until our course reqired a turn directly into the wind. I carried about 12 gallons of gas and probably didn't use a gallon. Best sail of the
2001 season for us. That it-- she'll be hauled out for the Lake Erie winter in a couple of days. Thanks again!
