General/Off-Topic / Happy Holidays to all
January 01, 2014, 02:19:29 PM
Hello to all again! Call me crazy, but i bought my old boat back. She sat for 6 yrs. It  was sad to see. Anyway, took her out yesterday for new year's sail.  It was nice, and cold. But happy haPPY HAPPY! It really doesn't matter that i really screwed up the approach to the slip....(no motor) but that's another story i really don't want to share. Point is i haven't been out for 6 yrs, and things i just did automatically before didn't happen in the rusty brain. And all it takes is one mistake with the procedure and it all goes downhill quick!
It will be fun to fix her up again.  I think the first thing on the list is a new main.

We've decided she needs a new home. Not an easy decision. Anyway, she's still in the water at Arlington, OR. Will be on trailer ready to go in Jan.
Bring $7500 and a 2-5/16" ball.:(

It's now Feb., still not on trailer if ya wanta go sailin' first. Lots of snow.

Technical / Oar locks
September 11, 2005, 10:48:52 AM
I installed them, use 11' carlisle sweeps. I put on a lanyard so they don't go away.
I like Mike's idea of installing them in the winches.
Tried to upload a couple pics, this thing says they're already in thread 'exterior wood finishes'. (page 3, #45)
My winch bases are not stock however.
I used the top plate mounts, drilled over sized hole, added epoxy, coated oarlock stem with wax, and inserted. Nice fit.
Topping lift for the boom makes it nice, i have brought her into the slip with a sheet in both hands,  main over my head, boom in the way, and trying to row. Learning curve is steep. They do work great on a calm day though. The 11' carlisle's are good for fending off also. Nissan 6hp works best when the wind is up. If it starts. I actually like sailing her in the best. Less to worry about.  ;)

Technical / Oregon???

Hey, welcome! How'd i miss this?!

I'm in Oregon also. Have a few extra jibs on my Ariel at Arlington, might work a deal for a sail in BAJA this winter!! lol One of them is a new one, i just don't like using it for some reason. Might work for you.
You can take a look anytime, maybe we can go for a spin.

Technical / Depth in hull transducer
September 09, 2005, 12:04:20 AM
Hey Tony,
It shoots through the hull, no hole. I like that. It's a fish finder, kids love it. We're spending more time fishing than sailing lately....
I like seeing what the bottom looks like, pretty kewl.

I wish i had more patience, to tackle projects like you!! The dinghy i started 6 months ago is still 1/2 done in the garage.

Anyone here do any scuba? I just signed up for a class. Thought i'd try to recover some lost objects from under the boat.... lol :D

You're gonna love this one...
About 2 yrs. ago i stuck mine in some wax from a toilet ring....(new of course!) Was gonna be temporary to see how it worked. It's still there, never has quit reading! Under the port berth, close to centerline. Just sand off some paint, use a putty knife for a gob of wax, and that's it. The sanding off the paint might even be optional.

Gallery / Introduced a few teens to sailing
August 05, 2005, 10:00:43 PM
I've been supervising a crew of teenagers in the national forest this summer. They decided we had to go sailing today, so we went. Beat the he-double tooth picks out of piling brush! Your tax dollars at work! lol
Anyway, they (we!) had a blast. I tried to make it educational for them, and i think it was a success. Keep in mind these kids have never been on a sailboat, or even seen one close up most likely, living in the desert of eastern Oregon. Anyhooo, we had to anchor over in the Bass fishing grounds when the fish finder lit up. So here's a few pictures...
It sure was a rough day at work! ;)

Technical / sheet to tiller

This is good reading.

http://www.oarclub.org/page22.html [LINK NO LONGER WORKING]
And make sure you look at the next page for diagrams, etc.

I'm gonna play around with it, not that i can stay on a heading for any extended time on the river, but would like to get more of a handle on the CE balancing act. (I see yawl was discussed earlier! lol)  Had the pirates out on the Columbia today, great Father's Day. They flew their pirate flag, here's a pic for fun. Camera died when the admiral was taking the better/later ones. Figures. Someday i'll get some of her sailing from the beach... ;)

Sailing and Events / Fun!
June 13, 2005, 09:22:13 AM
It is supposed to be fun!! That's what the admiral tells me everytime!
She told me that yesterday when i headed to the boat to install the new depth sounder/fish finder. "Have fun" she says! So after i got it installed, i decided to have fun! And it's fun trying to figure this sail trim business out.
Thinking i need to turn her into a yawl! lol Get some weather helm!

So what you're saying is a storm jib won't do much?

Sailing and Events / Need a storm jib
June 12, 2005, 10:09:16 PM
Took her out today--the wind site says we were in solid 20 mph, with gusts to 30. Left the dock with single reefed main, had my smallest jib ready to hoist. (it's about 90% i'd guess. Pretty high cut, so that's just a guess) Must have got that 30 gust about the time i got it up, 'cause boy we headed around fast. Glad i had the downhaul rigged too. Got it down before anything bad happened! Whew. This solo sailing is interesting.  So out we went with the reefed main, and i was suprised how well she actually will sail with no jib. Granted the upwind crawl into the chop (understatement!)was pretty slow, and wet, but we made steady progress. What a hoot!! Even sailed her back into the slip, stepped off and tied her off just like you're supposed to.

So, a couple questions....

Will a small storm jib help her make better progress to windward? And is there one that will keep her balanced, maybe a bit of weather helm, with a single reefed main? And still add some drive? If so, where do i get it, and what would the measurements be? Theis?  Mike? Ed? Bill? Anyone? Thanks!
