Has anyone tried this yet and if so, opinions and diameter?

Technical / Tack Pennant Rigging Diagram
March 27, 2017, 11:12:58 AM
I don't know how to post images to a current thread.  Yes I read the FAQ but the "manage images" button is nowhere to be found unless I post a whole new thread.  I'm a newbie.  So I posted a whole new thread!

Technical / Pennant block - with photos
March 27, 2017, 11:10:42 AM
OK, now I have photos and wonder how to rig this thing and what it is used for?  As you can see the block is old and broken.

I'm most concerned with the pennant halyard near the deck.  Where and how to rig it to avoid tangled lines.

The small block was attached to the "Flag Halyard Guide".  Somewhere else I saw a photo of the setup but could not find it again for this post.  The drawing is from the manual.

Technical / Tack Pennant Rigging Diagram
March 24, 2017, 06:11:21 PM
I recently removed a small old cracked block from my masthead which I have since learned via the manual is a "tack pennant"?  How does one use this thing and for what mostly?  Is it in leu of a spreader mini block for hoisting pennants?  (I don't have one on my spreaders yet)
I'd also like to know how to properly use it and hoist a pennant.  Also, is it only used in port with the sails down?  Does the pennant halyard get tangled?  Tips and tricks?

Forgive my protocol ignorance.

Gallery / Commander #266. "The Way"
February 20, 2017, 10:01:58 AM
My baby sitting at rest at the Niantic Bay Yacht Club.

I raced her a few times this summer in the staggered start Sunday races.  Initially my rating was textbook - 261 and we finished 1st a number of times.  In fact, a couple times we were so far ahead we finished with time to order a pizza before the next boat crossed.  (exaggerating, but it was a huge lead).  They changed my rating - a lot.

Full disclosure - At the helm I had a veteran ocean racer with a decade of racing on a J40 in Florida.  He is teaching me how to race.  We have old sails, no traveler, no self tailing winches, a Crosby rigged mainsheet, no depth or speed gauges and we still kicked ass.  Had the rails in the water several times.

I too am a newbie and the good people of this cult will soon have you drinking the Kool-aid!  They are knowledgeable and enthusiastic.  I have a Commander which I consider floating artwork.  I like looking at her almost as much as sailing her.

Where in Long Island are you?  I'm in CT, maybe close enough to meet somewhere this summer.

If you need help Bob I would be glad to provide a second set of hands.  I saw your boat a couple days ago parked near mine!

Technical / Boat drain
February 03, 2017, 01:37:12 PM
Is there one?  I was curious if the original design included a boat drain or bilge drain? I know the answer on keel drain but is there some hull fitting to drain standing water in the boat?

Technical / What is deck coring under the mast step?
October 08, 2016, 11:18:16 AM
I really want to know if the coring between the mast step and compression post is balsa.  Considering the constant pressure at that one point I would be surprised if it were balsa but what do I know.  My education is not in marine engineering.

Technical / Fair existing rudder?
July 19, 2016, 12:39:52 PM
By fairing I mean coating the mahogany with epoxy and fiberglass.  the only other thing I'd do is replace the mahogany boards as you suggest.  lots more work.

Technical / Good guess
July 19, 2016, 12:24:17 PM
Your diagram is accurate.  The DFO had extended the boot stripe a few inches at the stern.  My conclusion is to hide the scum line from sitting too low in the water at the stern.  It makes sense he had lots of water in there.

Technical / Fair existing rudder?
July 19, 2016, 08:17:30 AM
Has anyone ever done that?  I searched the site and couldn't find any examples or comments.  Everyone usually makes a whole new rudder.  I was thinking of fairing the original beat-up one I have.

Comments?  Suggestions?  Intervention?  Save me from myself?

Technical / The rot
July 19, 2016, 08:12:48 AM
The rot is limited to the forward most section of the board.  Right near where it meet cabin wall.  I may just use GITROT or something.  Not sure.
