Sailing and Events / Ariel to the South Pacific
August 08, 2015, 08:33:06 PM
Elliot, I've been updating the blog here and there. I have a bunch of things to post whenever I get around to it. The plan is to head south from San Francisco around October. There are some other Alberg folks here in the Bay who might just be able to sail at the same time. Then Mexico, then maybe further south, then west - a lot.

Technical / Provisioning

Ahoy Ebb! I agree that provisioning is key. Garlic is a wonderful idea to have aboard. I provision pretty simply. Lots of rice, beans, and ramen. Of probably equal importance is a good supply of hot sauce. No matter what maritime disaster I'm able to conjure up in the pot, it can almost always be improved with the addition of a little hot sauce.

I'm a big fan of my stainless pressure cooker. I can do everything from make bread to cook stew or rice in it. Hell, I even brought along mason jars for those tuna I'm planning on catching and canning (there are specific instructions for fish - and it must be pressure canned, not water bath canned).

Another important thing I learned growing up and sailing in Florida is to protect the food from moisture, to include humidity. Nearly all of my provisions are double ziplocked, even the canned goods. The warmer the weather gets and the closer to the equator I get, the more perishable my perishables become. The Puget Sound was an amazing reprieve from insect and rot problems. When taking stores aboard, I try to field strip them as much as possible. I've gotten weevils, palmetto bugs, roaches, and other insects aboard simply by neglecting to remove the cardboard box from muffin mix and the like.

A big staple aboard is peanut butter. People can say whatever they want about cruising, but the reality for most small boat cruisers is that a quick snack at sea consists of a spoonful of peanut butter (straight from the jar, naturally) and some saltines, in varying stages of consciousness and/or undress. I carry a good supply of potted meat and stuff like that. With no refrigeration it's rare for me to take fresh things aboard. Potatoes aboard are a staple. They keep well and can be thrown in the pressure cooker next to the rice bowl. Eggs without refrigeration can keep for a surprisingly long time. I always break them individually into a cup to ensure they haven't turned prior to using them. I've ruined what would have been an amazing meal by slopping a stinky egg over everything - lesson learned.

Great post, Ebb. I've heard about your boat and am keen to get a look at her while I'm in the Bay if possible!

On my boat it's a solo voyage. I've had a chance to meet with most of the Triton owners at Berkeley marina, as well as one in Richmond. A group of us took Steve's Juno out for a Thursday sail last week. I'll also be present for the upcoming Classic Plastic race. Hoping to find a boat to crew on. I'm really enjoying the east coast vs west coast discussion since I've been here (we all know that the east coast boats are where the quality is at!).

These guys are awesome! Sailed over to Berkeley Wednesday and went on a Thursday sail to Treasure Island. Steve runs a tight ship with a crack crew.

They called themselves old farts, not me...

Great meeting ya'll! I'm planning on heading across the Bay next week to see everybody's boats.

Hi all. Bill asked me to start a new thread about this voyage I'm currently undertaking. I suppose the best way would be to put up my blog address here. Feel free to say hi on this thread or at:

Ahoy! Erebus and I have just sailed from the Puget Sound down to San Francisco. Waiting on some paperwork so we can continue on to the Marquesas. I understand there's an active Ariel/Commander fleet in the Bay. I'm anchored out at Sausalito and it'd be great to sail with other Pearsons.

Hoping to meet some folks!

Erebus and I sailed from Olympia, Wa to Longbranch and then Gig Harbor. A few pictures from the weekend.

Hi there. Yeah, that picture is a little deceiving. In Budd Bay where it was taken it's so narrow that waves don't have much of a chance to build when the wind is from the east or the west. I was headed north and a pretty good gust caught me. It was a steady 20+ that day and I had her sheeted in a bit too much. I was having fun.

Ahoy! The wood rub rail was on the boat when I got her. There are a couple soft spots, so it's nearing time for a facelift, but the cockpit coamings will have priority there. So far as mods go, I have a 50w solar panel just about ready to install, and in the cabin I've installed an 'Atom Stove,' which is the brainchild of James Baldwin of Triton fame. Otherwise I'm just attending to basic upkeep things. Within the next few months I hope to replace the standing rigging and chainplates. The paint for the decks has been hanging around for a good bit, waiting for the PNW weather and my free time to agree with each other. The nonskid will eventually be beige. I feel a big voyage coming on.

So far as living aboard goes, I'm quite content. Another person aboard full time would likely be cramped. This boat isn't equipped with A/C power, which is just fine by me. She has a bank of two group 27 batteries for a total of about 130 amp hours. I've recharged her only three times in the past year. My power demands are pretty low. She currently has a l/s Yamaha 8hp 2-stroke, though I'd like to downsize to a 3hp-5hp eventually - when the right motor comes around and all.

The windvane works nicely. It's so narrow in Budd Bay that I really don't play with it very often, but it holds the course within 5 degrees or so on most points of sail. Any faults in its operation are almost certainly due to my having to learn to truly balance the sails. I sailed up for the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival (I work for Devlin Boats) and had an opportunity to set her for a couple hours when headed back south. I must admit, it was almost creepy going below and reading a book (for a short period of course, given the shipping traffic there) while the boat and windvane took care of the sailing.

This is a great website and I'm looking forward to sharing information and experiences about our lovely little boats. I've liked Alberg's designs since I was a kid, and my last boat was a Kenner Kittiwake. Alberg, Herreshoff, Alden and Baldwin probably had a huge influence in my choosing yacht design as a profession. Cheers!

As an aside, if anybody has a gently used Ariel main they'd like to part with...my Catalina main seems to work fine and all, but it'd be nice to have the proper one.

Here's the last of what I'll post. The red hull is the current scheme.

Bought hull 295 in Kingston on December 26th last year (Merry Christmas to me!). I'm a liveaboard in Olympia. I've recently painted her and installed a Norvane. 50w panel is coming in a week or two. I'm just gonna dump a bunch of pictures of her since I've been the steward.
