Technical / Repairing Coamings
November 28, 2013, 02:33:45 PM
Last month took the coamings off my Commander since one is split about half-way the length of the board.  Last owner sunk a big lag bolt through the end into the deck but even that gave way over time.

Since the coaming is weight bearing for the winches I want to repair it correctly.  Advise is welcome.  Think my options are as follows;

1. sink wood biscuits on either side of the split.  Then hold the split open as far as I dare and slather wood glue into the split and also glue the biscuits into their slots and clamp shut until dry.
2. finish ripping the coaming so I have 2 pieces and repeat as above.

Pictures are here.  Thanks in advance.

Welcome Jeff / Wobbly;

Very nicely maintained.  Love Wobbly's color and the inboard to boot.  Took my coamings off for a winter restoration project last month.  One has a split in it and figured I could never properly repair it in place.  While I am at it will bring the mahogany back to life.  Will let you know how it turns out.  Happy sailing (in the spring) C-195

Technical / Bilge pumps on Commanders
October 09, 2013, 06:36:36 PM
Have been advised by my surveyor to install an automatic bilge pump.  I have 2 good batteries, switches and a service panel.  Wondering what model / capacity of pump is advised.  Where to place it and if it is sufficient to run the drain aft into the well and into the drink near my outboard.

Technical / Hatchway board with screen cut out
October 09, 2013, 06:31:49 PM
Wondering if other Commander owners have one of the hatchway boards cut out with a small screen inserted as I do?  Is so do you find it lets rain in and did you replace it?  Cover it in some way.  Worried during a driving rain it may soak things down below.

Has anyone ever tried replacing the Commander hatchway boards with a door?  Wondering how it worked out.  Suspect it would look better but at what cost?

Thanks for the heads up on cruising with the lower hatch way board in place.  Will do so from now.

As promised.  Trying again to post pics of Commander 195.  Needs a little paint and varnish same as I need a shave and shoeshine.

I tried posting my pics to DropBox and Facebook and then pasting the link here.  How does everyone else add their pictures?  Which service do they use typically to get a URL for their pics?

Never before seen by the forum apparently.  She looks good for being close to 50 years.  BTW thanks for all the posts suggesting 6 HP Tohatsu would both fit and power a Commander just fine.  Our marina guy told me nothing would fit.  It's tight but works like a charm.

Even my wife is enjoying the old girl.

Gallery / Commander 195 permission to board

Picked up Commander 195 after a 17 year stay in Boothbay Harbor ME this past August.  Moved her down to Noank CT and have been sailing there for the last 3 weeks or so, trying to enjoy her as much as possible before the season ends.

Nothing major to do but plenty of small things to attend to before next spring to make her Bristol.

Thanks all for the stockpile of wisdom on how to care for these fine old ships.  I am told C-195 has not been registered with the association before so glad you all now have my back.

Pictures to follow in the spring.
