That latch system is the original and it will last forever, or until your Ariel is destroyed by a hurricane as mine was.  I'd leave it alone -- don't fix what ain't broke!

Of course, now that I have a Cape Dory, I'm kind of partial to the Bomar hatch.    My Bomar is water tight.  My Ariel's forward hatch was not water tight in heavy seas, even cranked down with new rubber.  And my Bomar can be opened at any angle to allow better air flow when anchored.

1. Also have the club published manual which every one who owns an Ariel should have.

2. In the picture in previous post, is a cute little custom built epoxy coated mahagony hatch AC prop.  Anyone who puts an AC in the hatch needs a good stand to prop the AC because it's HARD to jump that AC without stepping on it on the way into the cabin.

Here are pix of some of the stuff I have available (boom and running lights are gone):  a dinette table assembly, a swim ladder (needs refinishing, but works fine and has mounting hardware), cockpit hatches, reinforced forward hatch, lazarette, main hatch, icebox cover (both cabin and cockpit hatches available), cabin drawers (I have five in good condition).

Also I have engine parts galore (pistons, valves, fuel and water pumps, points, condensors, plugs,...) and hardware galore (turnbuckles, cabinet hinges, cabinet latches, cockpit latches, ...)

With great sadness I report that at least two Ariels were lost in Hurricane Ike:  Chalupa (Hull 56) and Knotmeister (I wrote the hull number down, but lost it).  Chalupa was purchased new by my father, restored by me, and never sailed by anyone but my father and me. I've purchased a Cape Dory 28 so won't need my 45 year stash of Ariel parts.

These parts are available to anyone who wants them.  I'm willing to drop any part at my local PostNet shipper,  let them box it and ship it, and trust that you will send me a check to compensate.

Those are beautiful pix.  Apparently the first model was 24' but she was stretched to 25'7" and beamier in later renditions.  It appears she became more 'Ariel-like' as she grew!

The last "Good Old Boat" magazine has a picture of the Rhodes designed Meridian 26.  She looks so like the Ariel that I want to know more?  Alberg vs. Rhodes.  Was the time just right for this design?  Was one following the other's lead?  Which design came first?  Anybody know?

Did you ever get dimensions for your cradle?    I need to build a trailer or a cradle (to put on a trailer) so am in need of these dimensions!  Bill says they are in "the manual."  What manual?

Wow, you built a trailer for $1200?!  Any chance we could see photos and get a description.  I am in the market for a trailer to bring mine home for some work.  Fortunately for me, Hurricane Rita took all my fencing down, so now it will be easy to drive her in to the yard!

Thank you for the most thoughtful reply.  It certainly demonstrates how much you have thought about the problem.  Hull 56 will come out for a bottom job next summer, and I'll probably tackle a few other major items at that time.  Since I currently have a good friend at a stainless shop it would not be difficult to have exact copies made.   I'll heed your advice with regards to inspecting, recoring, retabbing, and adding an extra hole!  She has been rerigged exactly once, by me, so the rest of the rigging is in order.

Great discussion -- every time I open my locker or lazarette I wonder about those plates.  The obvious next step for the association is to get a head count and make up a bunch so those of us too lazy to pull them and have them made can order a set.  That will force me to action!

Thanks! Nice looking trailer.    I have a friend who might like to share costs *if* it is rated to hold his boat, a 30 foot wooden boat that displaces 15,000 lbs.  Can you tell me what she's rated to hold?

Any chance you could put some pictures on-line for us to see?  Next year I want to do some serious work on mine and I could put it in my back yard if I had a trailer -- of course, my neighbors would have a heart attack!

Well, did the dickering work out or is the trailer still for sale?

Sailrite may list them as such, but I don't believe that I could get a 27' luff tight on my original equipment.  And if one has a bimini, one might want even shorter than the 25'6" that my original sail's luff.    Alberg was well known for having LOTS of sail area and I find that in most enjoyable conditions that a bit less main makes for a more balanced helm.  With one reef and a working jib I can leave the helm of Chalupa and go below to mix another adult beverage.  Granted, since I drink straight bourbon, mixing does not take long, but she will stail on a beam reach all day under those sails.  I believe that most of the sail making sites are really listing for Pearson 26's, not for Pearson Aerials.  Later 26's has longer masts.
