Technical / Jiffy Reef
December 12, 2003, 03:23:31 PM
My commander had no reefs until I obtained a nice used main with 1 set of reef points. all The boats in my sailing club had Jiffy reefing, So I installed the syswtem myself. On the goose neck I put a hook for the cunningham, and on the aft starboard end of the boom I put an eyehook. To the eyehook I attached a 22' 5/16 line that runs up from thestarboard, through the reef kringle, and down the port side of the sail to a block mounted on the boom. the rope goes through the block and then forward to a clam cleat with an eye ring in front of it. it is llos until you reef.
to rref I let out the main halyard to put the hook at the gooseneck and pull tight the rope led through the leef reef cringle, then ty the main with the reef lines permanently attached to the sail. Done while Hove-to, it is quick and easy, even in 30knot winds. I have had to on lake huron 2x last year

the diagram shows it qute well. For the 2nd reef though, you need an additional setup

"jiffy Reefing" It is fun for the whole family,

Technical / had the same problem
November 07, 2003, 11:11:52 AM
On commander #138 the fiberglass was worn away down to the wood. The wood was in good shape, so instead of glassing it in, I used my favorite all time boat stuff (since buying a boat) Over the wood ( i chiseled out a small rotten area) I applied  Interprotect Watertite, a 2 part epoxy. I love the stuff, it is waterproof. Just let it dry, sand it and paint it. it is designed for gel coat blister repair, but can be applied up to 3/4? of an inch. My motor mount where I used it has been great, no problems and that was 2 season ago. Incidently, proper repair of the drain hole there is VERY important, that is how the water can get into the wood as well. ( I dried it with a blower dryer for several days, then used my favorite stuff to epoxy in a rubber tube cut flush, epoxy and painted the ends of the tube in place. where the tube exits the fiberglass. I did not dry it long enought the 1st time becasue water eventually pushed its way out around the tub. You need to do this after a haulout. Good luck

Technical / Depth in hull transducer
August 08, 2003, 02:22:11 PM
I just bought the Norcross hawkeye depth sounder and installed everything but the transducer. It is an in hull/transom mount. I tried to get a reponse in hull with vaseline by putting in the forward most bilge, near the bow and starboard amidships, but without luck. anyone with experience with this ?
