General/Off-Topic / Commander #4 for sale
April 18, 2017, 01:21:58 PM
FS, Commander #4. Yes, #4 is for sale. Need to get smaller, so purchased a 23' Sea Sprite, since I can't own anything other than an Alberg. Located in Harpswell, Me., sailed in Casco Bay. Roller furling and 135% genny, (3 years old), Quantum main and jib, spinnaker. Tohatsu 6 hp, less than 10 hours.
Deck is firm, could use deck paint. Topsides painted 3 years ago. Speedo and depth, usual compliment of "stuff".  Boat is in very good condition.   Asking $6000.00   email - loukimball@mac.com

Technical / tabernacle mast
July 08, 2016, 02:12:37 PM
Anyone ever attempted to hinge the mast at the cabin top? I would like to be able to launch the boat without having to pay to step and unstep the mast. I have Commander #4 "Robin". The idea would be to lay it back to a crutch at the stern, then pull the hinge pin and walk it forward (2 people). Thanks!

Thanks Paul! We love our boat, and will eventually restore it all. It's the kind of boat you can pass along to your kids.

Yes, I only have the port side access, but not all changes were improvements in my mind- the newer boats seem to have the f-glass bench seat running in front of the companionway. I like the better access and more leg room provided by our configuration.

Very nice Fritz! Can you believe our boats will be 50 years old?

Technical / engine retrofit for commander/ariel

Thanks Mike- I'm going to talk to my neighbor, who is a retired diesel mechanic, albeit on big rigs. Are you re-powering? Since you have the inboard option, what does your lazerette look like? No motor well. I assume.
Just went to the photos on your link- nice looking boat!

Hi Fritz,
We got our boat in 2007. I was an Ensign sailor for 20 years, so I knew what great boats Alberg designed. We love our boat, and I'm slowly restoring it. Sails like a dream. Didn't see the photo of your boat, but would love to.

Here's a couple of pictures of what I think is the oldest surviving Commander.

Technical / engine retrofit for commander/ariel
October 01, 2013, 03:46:44 PM
Hi everyone,
I'm in Maine and have Commander # 4.  It is set up with the outboard motor well, and  I have a Tohatsu 6 hp 4 cycle which I lay down in the Lazarette and only use once or twice a season. I do have a knockout for the prop in my rudder. Has anyone ever tried to install a small diesel inboard in a boat with the motor well? I'm not getting any younger and wrestling with the outboard is not my idea of fun. I know it is likely to be very expensive, but i got the boat for a terrific price and will be keeping it until I can no longer sail.
Thanks for any tips or advice you may have.
Best,
Lou

Technical / Nissan 6 HP 4 cycles
September 30, 2008, 03:33:42 PM
Thanks for the input.  Looks like a 6hp. Tohatsu is in my future. I'll try just keeping it stowed over the summer until  I need it. I would love to retro fit an inboard, but the cost would be more than I paid for the boat.
Thanks again,
Lou
