The most interesting thing about the photo that you posted (other than the body position of the guy on the lee side) is the color of the water. Where was that one taken? Out here when the sea runs brown. Wise sailors stay in port: Lot's of tree trunks in the sea under those conditions. I assume that photo that you posted was taken in a river somewhere.
I had a knock down that looked a lot like that in my Catalina years ago, but anyone no other boat was around to take photos. I blew out my main, and tore off the traveler. The cause was that both pintles on the rudder sheered off on a very windy day with about six foot seas and a fair amount of spray. The deck went vertical in hurry.
I've actually had my Ariel in that position once. Won't go into details other than inattention and stupidity were involved. She laid on her side for a minute like she was patiently reminding me "that was really dumb. Pay attention, stupid" before rounding up and popping back upright. Had the leeward winch submerged and was holding on for dear life but didn't take any water into the cabin or suffer any damage other than pride. And it was nice to learn that the boat will compensate quite well for operator error.

I take it that photo was not taken on the Rio de la Plata. The color is sort of pretty though. Time to put in the top hatchboard, I'd say.
For some reason that photo did not show up on my browser. I was, however, able to download it and view it with my photopublishing software.
Two reasons I like cruising rather than racing:
1. You don't push the limits when cruising testing to see if these things would ever happen, and
2. No one is around to take a picture.
