Title: Harken roller furler
Post by: pmorgan on February 20, 2002, 07:39:38 PM
Hi.  I'm going to install a Harken size 0 roller furler on my Ariel.  Does anyone have experience with these units? Did you find you needed a halyard restrainer?

Thanks for any help you might have.

I have had this unit on Sirocco for about 3 years with a 165 genoa,no restrainer.

It's time to start looking at roller furlers again.  Harken #0 is a nice model.  Do you know if that particular model will fit over a 1/4" forestay?  The tech page a Harken sez 7/32" but I'm wondering if one could integrate parts from a larger size.

The August 15, 2004 edition of Practical Sailor published a survey of riggers' opinions on furlers.  Seems they use the Schaefers as the standrad by which they judge the others.

Bill,
Thanks.  I dug out that copy and had a chance to read it on a recent trip.  I honestly don't know why I hadn't read it earlier.  Even though Schaefer gets the thumbs up I snagged this one at nearly half off regular price because someone had pilfered two ten dollar shackles from the box.  Maybe next year I'll get to see what it looks like on the boat!
