Title: Winter Cover
Post by: jshisha on October 16, 2006, 08:43:55 PM
I am looking for a winter canvase and some strongbacks for a commander.  Does anyone know if anyone sells a premade one for a commander or any suggestions on how I can make or purchase a suitalbe winter cover.

Thanks

Don't believe I've ever heard of a "premade" winter cover for one our our boats.  There have, however, been some grand designs published by owners.  Try a searching for "boat cover," you'll get about 10 pages of posts to ponder. :D

Some folks have recommended these tarps and this site: http://www.tarpsonline.com/silver.asp

And this site has almost anything you could need, good service too: http://www.mcmaster.com/

I haven't tried the silver type yet - I think I may still have a second season left on the blue one 30x15 I picked up at a local hardware store: http://www.pearsonariel.org/discussion/attachment.php?attachmentid=2961&stc=1&d=1134445395

I've used a silver tarp I picked up on sale at Harbor Freight for two winters now and I suspect it has at least two more to go.  Not bad for $45.

Try http://www.thecanvasstore.com .
They aren't pre-made, but may be able to whip up a Commander top in pretty short order.
And are reasonably priced.

I've used the harbor freight silver tarps for years.  they have them 1/2 off at least once a year.  in Michigan, they last for 2 winters.  I've considered getting the canvas ones from them to see if they would last longer, but  haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've used the blue ones for one year (Airel). Good luck.  I've gotten ffour years out of the gray covers but they are a pain if you go into the boat while the boat needs to be covered.  This year I have given up and am getting a formfitting canvas cover for use with the mast up.  The others are a tough haul with the mast up.  This cover is designed to be for fitting, and will let me work on the inside under the cover while it still covers the boat.  This cover is not inexpensive, but compared to a shrinkwrap plastic cover, it should pay for itself in two to three years.
